Jack Brereton, Member of Parliament for Stoke-on-Trent South has this week been part of the committee which unanimously voted in favour of introducing further sanctions on the Belarusian Lukashenko regime.
The Third Delegated Legislation Committee, made up of cross MPs, met on Monday 26th June 2023 to consider further sanctions against Belarus. The fresh sanctions being introduced by the UK on Belarus are aimed at trade. New sanctions on imports and exports between the two nations will now be introduced following agreement by Jack Brereton and other members of the committee.
This follows the support Belarus has given to Putin’s barbaric illegal war in Ukraine and follows the recent reports of nuclear weapons being moved into Belarus by Russia.
Jack Brereton MP said:
"The barbaric illegal invasion of Ukraine by President Putin has horrified both Europe and the world. Here in Stoke-on-Trent residents have spoken to me at length about their pain in seeing the attacks on innocent Ukrainian people, real fears about the threats posed by Putin’s Russia and the impacts they are feeling from the inflationary cost rises it has caused.
The dictator President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has shamelessly stood by and aided President Putin in his efforts to illegally take control of Ukraine. This is not right, and we must challenge the blatant support for this murderous regime.
I was proud to be able to join my colleagues in Westminster today and vote in favour of further sanctions being imposed on Belarus. I proudly stand by our Ukrainian allies, and I am pleased to have played a part in frustrating President Lukashenko's and Putin's malicious plans."
