Jack Brereton MP was last night re-selected unanimously by local Conservative members to be the Stoke-on-Trent South candidate for the next general election, likely to be in 2024.
Jack expressed his happiness at once again having the chance to be able to represent Stoke-on-Trent South at the next general election.
Jack said:
“As someone who has lived in Stoke-on-Trent my whole life, I have worked hard to ensure our city is finally at the forefront of the Government’s focus and we have secured the investment our area needs, with hundreds of millions of extra funding secured for our city since I was elected.
“I have ensured Stoke-on-Trent South is the No.1 focus for levelling up of opportunities and I am determined to ensure we deliver fully on unlocking the huge potential of our area. The constituency will be slightly different after the next election, and I am committed to giving my all to serve the communities across the constituency, including in Stoke-on-Trent and the new wards from Staffordshire Moorlands and Stafford Borough.”
In speaking to local members Jack detailed the huge achievements that have been secured locally by MPs and the City Council working together. This has included:
- £56 million through the Levelling up Fund, more than any other place in the country to help redevelop derelict sites across the city to create new homes and jobs.
- £70 million through both Transforming Cities Funding and Bus Service Improvement Funding to help deliver major improvements to local bus and rail services.
- Success through the Restoring Your Railways Programme resulting in ongoing feasibility work towards a new £15 million station at Meir, and potential reopening the Stoke-Leek Line via Fenton Manor.
- 500 new jobs being delivered through the Home Office moving to Stoke-on-Trent.
- 231 new police officers already on the beat in Staffordshire with more to come and action now being taken to look into the reclassification of the drug Monkey Dust to a Class A drug which will help drive this horrific drug off our streets.
- New medical centre opened in Longton with significant progress on the second phase to develop an Integrated Care Hub which would massively improve health services for the whole of the south of the city and reduce pressure on urgent and emergency care.
- Stoke-on-Trent being included as a Prioritised Education Investment Area and as part of the Government Family Hubs Programme, helping all young people have the best possible start in life.
Jack also mentioned the importance of addressing illegal immigration given the pressures being felt locally. He emphasised the new tough approach being taken by the Prime Minister with urgent new laws to ensure we can tackle small boats and deliver the Rwanda policy which would provide more effective deterrence to illegal migration.
Jack also touched on some of the challenges and achievements we have made nationally including: respecting the wishes of people locally having delivered Brexit, leading the world in our vaccination efforts in the battle against Covid-19, being at the forefront of support for Ukraine in the face of Putin’s brutal illegal war, and in providing huge support to families in the face of global energy and inflationary pressures.
The changes to the Parliamentary boundaries mean that at the next general election the constituency is likely to be slightly different to the current. The areas of Fenton, Sandford Hill and Meir Hay will now form part of the Stoke-on-Trent Central constituency. The new Stoke-on-Trent South constituency will now also include two wards from Staffordshire Moorlands District: Forsbrook and Checkley and three wards from Stafford Borough: Fulford, Barlaston and Swynnerton & Oulton.
