I am so excited to share with residents a letter I have received from the Rail Minister regarding our efforts to re-open Meir Station.
Since 2017, I have been strongly campaigning for the re-opening of the station and in that time working with the City Council we have put together a strong bid that has been submitted to the Government.
It is fantastic news that the Department for Transport has approved our strategic outline business case, the project will now receive further funding to develop it into a full business case and detailed delivery study. This will be conducted by experts at Network Rail and will ultimately lead to the reopening of the station at Meir and restoration of local rail services.
I firmly believe that Meir having its own rail link would massively improve transport links locally, make it easier for people to get around, access better jobs and skills, improve air quality, and increase mobility for vulnerable people.
The Station would be located right at the centre of Meir on the site of the old Meir Station with easy access for the whole community. Given Meir has one of the lowest car ownership levels nationally, yet suffers from both a lack of effective public transport and high level of congestion, demonstrates the clear need to improve local transport.
I will continue to work with Cllr Abi Brown the Leader of the City Council and our local Councillor for Meir, Cllr Faisal Hussain to deliver the improvements we need to help level up opportunities for everyone living in Meir.
