Jack Brereton MP has welcomed the new agenda from the Government as set out in the King’s Speech and the benefits it will bring to people across Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire.

“This was a historic King’s Speech; the first time we have had a King giving a speech to Parliament since 1950. It set out the new, long-term plans to help grow our economy and secure the benefits of Brexit. For Industries and businesses in Stoke-on-Trent plans for new trade agreements will help take full advantage of the new opportunities, helping trade more of the fantastic products made locally right around the world and supporting skilled local jobs.
It was good to hear the Government plans to continue helping families and people with the cost of energy but also to ensure energy security. I was very pleased to hear the King mention the Network North proposals, which is particularly important for Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire. The cancellation of Phase 2 of HS2 will ensure investment is focused on local and regional improvements of both our roads and rail services.
I have had many constituents also contact me about the live export of animals, so I am very pleased to see the Government is moving ahead with plans to ban the live export animals, ensuring the UK has the highest animal welfare standards of anywhere in the world. I also very much support the action taken to support renters and people getting on the housing ladder through renter and leaseholder reforms.
It was also a very positive to see actions to ensure the most serious child sex offenders and rapists, receive the toughest of sentences and reforms will be brought forward to support victims. With the extension of police powers, I am pleased that Staffordshire police will be better equipped to tackle issues of anti-social behaviour and the abuse of drugs like monkey-dust.
These legislative areas announced in the King’s Speech holds positive benefits for Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire, and I look forward to the next parliamentary sessions and seeing the Government’s plans implemented.”

“Today marked the first King’s Speech in over seventy years, bringing forward our plan to build a better future for the next seventy.
Just as I have done with energy security, net zero, illegal migration and HS2, the King’s Speech takes the long-term decisions to address the challenges this country faces, not the easy way out with short-term gimmicks.
As we take the necessary steps to halve inflation and reduce debt, we will legislate to grow the economy, by supporting innovative businesses and protecting consumers.
To make the real change this country needs, we will bring forward bills that strengthen our society, help people feel safer in their own communities and give a sense of pride in the place they call home.”
For too long governments of all colours have taken short-term decisions, instead of focusing on the right long-term decisions that will safeguard the future prosperity of our country. That’s why the Government has announced plans to deliver a brighter future for our country – setting out the laws that will be delivered over the next parliamentary session.
Legislation will focus on four key areas. First, growing the economy by introducing Bills focused on protecting our energy security, securing the benefits of Brexit, and ensuring the right framework for firms to compete and grow in the UK. Refocusing investment from the money saved through cancelling of Phase 2 in the local and regional transport improvements that communities across the Midlands and North need.
Second, strengthening society through protecting the mental health of young people and supporting private renters and landlords through a new Leasehold and Freehold Bill and by pressing ahead with the Renters’ (Reform) Bill introduced earlier this year.
Third, keeping people safe, giving criminals punishments they deserve and protecting society from terrorism was another area of Government legislation mentioned. This includes the Sentencing Bill and the Criminal Justice Bill, giving the police more powers to keep us safe.
Fourth, promoting our national interests by supporting our Armed Forces and veterans, protecting Ukraine from Putin and his illegal invasion, and leading the way on global challenges such as climate change. The UK is one of the world leaders in tackling climate change and will continue supporting developing countries with their environmental targets and commitments. As well, ensuring artificial intelligence is done safely, while protecting the jobs of hardworking people.
In each of these areas the Government is taking the right long-term action to deliver change and a brighter future for everyone in the United Kingdom, whilst continuing to halve inflation, prioritise higher growth over extra borrowing, reduce debt, relieve pressure on the NHS by cutting waiting lists and, crucially, implement the world-leading small boats laws to stop people smuggling gangs and stop the boats.
Today’s King’s Speech shows the Government are focused on taking the long-term decisions needed to deliver a brighter for future for the whole county.
